Course Overview:
Acts of Domestic terrorism have claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent people over the past several years and unfortunately these violent acts are increasing at an alarming rate. Participants in this course will gain an understanding of how groups and/or individuals progress from feeling disenfranchised to committing extreme acts of violence. The progressive cycle leading to an act of terrorism will be explained along with how to identify potential opportunities and methods to interrupt and prevent a pending attack.
Understanding the psychological differences between a perpetrator of a traditional crime and a perpetrator of an act of terrorism is paramount to a successful investigation. For investigative purposes it is equally important to understand the difference between an act of domestic terrorism and an act of transnational terrorism.
Students will explore the different roles and responsibilities of law enforcement, the military, and the intelligence services in combating terrorism. Officers will be presented with information regarding some of the unique idiosyncrasies and nuances associated with various extremist groups to include dress, speech, social media posts and symbols. Officer safety issues relating to domestic terrorism are also covered, as well as proactive investigative methodologies and tactics.
Several case studies and short videos will be used to support and illustrate the many learning objectives presented throughout the course.
